Jakub Mensik wins at The Boodles in a nail-biting super tie break.

Jakub Mensik and Hubert Hurkacz finalised their preparations for Wimbledon under the scorching sun at Stoke Park.  In a topsy-turvy match which saw Mensik narrowly claim the first set in a tie-break, but lose the second set to love, it was left to a 10-point tie-break to see the Czech 20-year-old take victory.

Jakub Mensik

“It is really hot in London, it was mostly luck today because of the super tie-break. Two days ago (in a defeat to Arthur Fils) I lost 2 points in a super tie break, and today I won in a tie break - it’s all based on luck.”

On Wimbledon

“It’s my third time playing at Wimbledon, and I am excited to go back tonight and start again tomorrow. I’ve been here (in the UK) for two weeks, it’s mostly the heat that I struggle with, but the grass I am used to.”

Hubert Hurkacz

“The serve helps my game on grass and I overall enjoy playing on grass, so we will see what happens at Wimbledon.”

Sebastian Baez d. Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 6-4

Sebastian Baez made his third appearance at The Boodles and finally took a win against Bratislava Open Challenger finalist Alexander Shevchenko. The Argentine looked comfortable on the Stoke Park grass, using his speed and consistency from the baseline to edge past the Kazakh.

Sebastian Baez

“To play some matches and to win today helps a lot to prepare for Wimbledon.”

On Wimbledon

“Many things at Wimbledon are special to me, it is a grass surface but also I love the elegance of the tournament and the history.”

Alexander Shevchenko

“The weather makes everything really tough, once you get into the rally, you feel very tired after it.”

On preparation for Wimbledon

“It was great to play a couple of matches here to get used to the grass because I haven’t played many matches. At Wimbledon, I will practice and have a lot of time on grass to prepare for Wimbledon.”

Mattia Bellucci d. Camilo Ugo Carabelli, 1-6, 6-3, (13-11)

Mattia Bellucci storms back from one-sided first set to claim dramatic tie-break win

After being defeated in a tough first round at Eastbourne, Mattia Bellucci rediscovered his winning touch with a victory over Camilo Ugo Carabelli. The pair went on a rollercoaster of a match, with momentum swings keeping the crowd entertained. However, it was the world-ranked 65th Italian who found greater consistency and kept pushing to secure the win.

Mattia Bellucci

“It was a little bit difficult in the beginning to get used to the heat, but also to get used to Camilo’s game - which was very good. He wasn’t making many mistakes and there weren’t many chances for me to get into the match. The second set was definitely better for me, as you could hear the crowd better. I really enjoyed my time on the court and I hope Camilo did too.”

On Wimbledon preparation

“I am trying to prepare as best as I can for Wimbledon, as this has been a very good match for me. From last year, I have good memories, hopefully this year will be even better. I played very good matches last year against Jiri Lehecka and another with Cameron Norrie. Hopefully this year will be even better. I hope everything goes in the right direction for me there.”

Camilo Ugo Carabelli

“I feel it very good here at The Boodles, last week at Eastbourne I couldn’t play to the best of my abilities due to right pain in my arm. I am excited to be at Wimbledon next week, after today’s match.”

be more aggressive, it is my second day here on grass courts so I will take more lessons going forward”
